Race Day — Saturday · Ranch Course
Opening Stint · Back 9 — Chapman Alternate Shot Best Ball. Both players tee off, switch balls for the second shot, then choose the best ball and alternate shots until holed. Head-to-head matchups are determined by Polling Position: P1 vs P2, P2 vs P3, P1 vs P4, P3 vs P5, P5 vs P6, P4 vs P7, P6 vs P7. Scoring: 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie. Ties resolved by the Pit Stop.
Final Sprint · Full 18 — 4-Man Scramble. All four drivers hit a tee shot, choose the best, all play from that spot. Each constructor's score is reduced by its Stroke Benefit: 1st seed −6, 2nd −5, 3rd −4, 4th −3, 5th −2, 6th −1, 7th ±0. Lowest adjusted total wins the Grand Prix.
The Starting Points Mechanic
Polling Position carries small-but-meaningful momentum into Saturday. 1st seed starts the Opening Stint with 6 points, 2nd with 5, down to 7th with 0. These Starting Points are added to Opening Stint earnings and re-seed the grid for the Final Sprint — but the Grand Prix is still won on the course Saturday.
Pit Stop Tiebreaker
Any tied Opening Stint matchup goes to the Pit Stop. Teams compete to hole out a golf ball from approximately 50 yards in the fastest time. See Schedule → Opening Stint → Pit Stop for full rules.
The winners lift the trophy. Then they pick the cause.
Starting in 2026, B&B teamed up with the Cars and Coffee Foundation to turn the Grand Prix into something that also gives back. The champion team each year directs the donation to a cause of their choice. For 2027, the check is $10,000.
It started with a weekend of golf in Steamboat Springs. A few friends, no scorecards that would hold up to scrutiny, no plan to do it again. Somewhere on the third hole, the sky above us filled up with hot air balloons — dozens of them, drifting over the fairway as the sun came up. We stopped mid-round, leaned on our clubs, and watched for what felt like a long time. By the end of the weekend we had a name.
A couple of us figured we'd do it again the next summer. We did. And every summer since. Somewhere along the way, what started as a casual trip for a handful of guys turned into something bigger — themed packets, matching polos, a draft board, a real trophy, a charity check, a growing list of guys who rearrange their fall to be there.
The format keeps changing. New faces show up every year. The scoring gets a little more elaborate. The rivalries get a little more entrenched. But the thing that makes it work is the same thing that made us stop and watch the balloons that first morning — a weekend that feels bigger than the sum of its parts, with the people you want to spend it with.
Whatever this becomes next, it started with a round of golf, a sky full of balloons, and a group of friends who didn't want the weekend to end.
